Cripple Creek Area Still Producing Gold – Aspen Gold!
This past weekend we drove up to Divide and Cripple Creek for our annual fix of fall colors. Only an hour or so from Colorado Springs, this is a very popular local area for color tours. The trees did not disappoint. 2010 has been a dry sunny fall, and the leaves were pretty much at peak color. We did a nice little hike at Putney Gulch, just past the Crags area, and really enjoyed being ‘up close and personal’ with the forest. After that, we drove on over to Cripple Creek, where the hillsides made a dramatic statement of reds and gold. Cripple Creek, once a big gold mining town, is now mainly a tourist spot and one of the few legal gambling venues in Colorado. But the gold we were looking for this weekend was in the aspen groves nearby, and we found it in ample quantities!
